Vermicelli / Sev Upma

Seviya Upma is also a popular South Indian dish, as called as Vermicelli Upma. It is occasionally used for breakfast. It is a fast and safe snack that you can cook easily in just 20 minutes with simple ingredients. In the spaghetti-like part, this upma recipe is a light and healthy breakfast option made from vermicelli, a traditional type of pasta. A fast snacking option for your hunger craving. This is so light that it is not just for breakfast or brunch but is considered to be an all-time meal.

As I mentioned earlier, there are several variations in the recipe and can vary with vegetables or spices added to it. Without any extra vegetables, or also known as simple upma, that is the most common recipe to prepare it. The flavour is derived primarily from the hint of lemon juice topped at the end of the recipe with onions and vegetables. In reality, the vermicelli upma is the most common way of preparing it. But adding vegetables such as beans, green peas, carrots and even broccoli can also be the other variation.

In addition, the recipe can also be extended by adding garam masala, pulav masala and vangi bath masala. In addition, by adding lentils and vegetables, the vermicelli recipe can also be prepared using bisi bele bath masala.

I’d like to add some tips and suggestions to this recipe for seviya upma. First of all, before using it in upma, I roasted seviya or vermicelli. This essentially helps to get rid of the raw smell. But you can also use store purchased roasted bambino vermicelli as an alternative, which should let you skip to further steps.

When I sautéed it with onions, I didn’t add the finely chopped tomatoes. The flavour should be very comparable to the recipe for tomato bath or tomato upma. Finally, and more importantly, just before the water begins to boil, make sure to add the roasted vermicelli. The end result will otherwise be mushy and sticky and may not be fun to serve.

Serve as is or with a conventional dish of sambar. Vermicelli Upma Ingredients for the recipe: urad dal, cooked vermicelli, tomato puree, vegetables along with spices and herbs such as carrots and peas. A bowl full of nutrients and flavours!
